Create thumb-stopping Dynamic Ads by using image templates

Updated: Jul 14, 2020

One of the most common push-backs that I tend to get when I recommend businesses to set up dynamic ad campaigns (ads automatically created from a product catalogue) is that it does not allow for creative control or branding. While the creative possibilities are still somewhat limited, Facebook has launched a number of tools for business to customise the creative for dynamic ads over the past few years.

Please note that you need a catalogue featuring your products and an implemented Facebook pixel with the ViewContent, AddToCart and Purchase event to be able to create dynamic ads.

I have summarised and tried out the creative options now available below.

Price and shipping overlay

This feature allows you to add pricing (exact price, strikethrough price or percentage off) or to show free delivery for the relevant products in the catalogue. To showcase this information in the image, you can choose from a number of shapes, fonts, colours as well as to select where in the image the information will be displayed and whether the shape should be solid or transparent.

Adding a border or a logo

You also have the ability to add graphics, such as a frame or a logo, on to the images in the ad. You want to use a file with a transparent background to make sure all products are fully visible, and once you have uploaded your frame (1MB max) you can edit the size, position etc.

You find these features once you have created your dynamic ad (by selecting “Product Catalogue Sales” as your objective) and going to the ad creative section on ad level. There, you click on the dropdown saying “Creative tools” and choose “Edit creative”.

While the dynamic ad templates in Ads Manager are not as exciting as the tools built by some of the Facebook Marketing Partners (such as Smartly), the features that have been added up to this point actually set you up for some nice, creative, opportunities to make you dynamic ads stand out in your future potential customers feeds.
